OCD Therapy: Finding Freedom From Intrusive Thoughts and Compulsive Behaviors

Do you find yourself caught in repetitive thoughts, constantly questioning your decisions, or seeking reassurance that everything will be okay? Perhaps you recognize that your fears seem unlikely, yet you can’t stop analyzing, checking, or trying to feel certain.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) isn’t always about cleanliness, organization, or visible rituals. For many people, OCD happens largely within their minds, making it difficult to recognize.

As a licensed clinical psychologist in Carlsbad, California, I help adults and teens understand OCD and develop practical skills to respond differently to intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and uncertainty.

Understanding OCD: More Than Just Obsessions and Compulsions

OCD often involves unwanted thoughts, images, urges, or doubts that create distress. In response, individuals may engage in repetitive behaviors or mental rituals intended to reduce anxiety or prevent something feared from happening.

Common OCD experiences include:

  • Relationship OCD: Repeatedly questioning your feelings, attraction, or whether you’re with the right person.
  • Scrupulosity (religious or moral OCD): Excessive doubts about morality, faith, sin, or whether you’ve done something wrong.
  • Harm OCD: Distressing, unwanted thoughts about accidentally or intentionally harming yourself or others.
  • Health-related OCD: Persistent doubts about illness, symptoms, or medical reassurance.
  • Checking and reassurance seeking: Repeatedly checking, researching, confessing, or asking others for certainty.
  • Mental compulsions and rumination: Replaying conversations, analyzing feelings, reviewing memories, or trying to solve hypothetical problems.

Although these experiences can feel overwhelming, effective psychological treatments are available.

My Approach to OCD Treatment

I use evidence-informed approaches tailored to your symptoms, goals, and individual needs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify patterns of thinking and behavior that contribute to anxiety and OCD. We work together to develop a healthier relationship with distressing thoughts and reduce behaviors that keep the OCD cycle going.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is a well-established treatment for OCD. It involves gradually learning to face uncertainty and distressing triggers while reducing compulsions and avoidance. Treatment is collaborative and proceeds at a manageable pace.

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)

I-CBT focuses on how OCD-related doubts develop and how imagination and hypothetical possibilities can begin to feel more compelling than what we actually know through our senses and everyday experience.

Rather than endlessly debating whether a feared possibility could happen, I-CBT helps individuals recognize the reasoning process that draws them into obsessive doubt and reconnect with their ordinary sense of reality.

You Don’t Have to Solve Every Doubt

One of the most exhausting aspects of OCD is the feeling that you must figure something out before you can move forward.

Therapy can help you recognize when OCD is pulling you into repetitive questioning and learn to respond without getting trapped in endless analysis.

The goal isn’t to eliminate every unwanted thought. It’s to help you regain flexibility, confidence, and the ability to participate more fully in your life.
